Protecting Our Kids: Prince William County Launches Campaign Against Youth Gambling Risks This Holiday Season
As the holiday season approaches, local officials in Prince William County, Virginia, are ramping up efforts to address the increasing risks of gambling among children and adolescents. Through a December campaign aimed at educating the community, county leaders are advocating against the common practice of including lottery tickets or scratch-off cards in children’s holiday stockings.
Growing Concerns About Gambling Behaviors
Wendy Hunt, a wellness and prevention team supervisor with the county, highlighted alarming trends in youth gambling. According to recent survey data, approximately 25% of individuals aged 18 to 24 reported participating in sports betting, while 15% engaged in lottery ticket games. Hunt emphasized the importance of proactive education to prevent problematic gambling behaviors from developing in adulthood.
“We are seeing a rise in gambling-related suicides,” Hunt stated. “To get ahead of the problem right before it becomes a problem for adults later on, we want to educate our youth early.’ She stressed the significance of equipping young people with the skills needed to manage their gaming habits before they escalate.
Video Games and Gambling-Like Behaviors
In addition to traditional forms of gambling, Hunt pointed to the influence of online video games, which are increasingly incorporating features that mimic gambling behaviors, such as microtransactions and loot boxes. These game mechanics can create a perception of skill involvement when, in reality, they are often chance-based.
“All these little things are increasing the interest and engagement in gambling-type behaviors,” Hunt explained. “When users make purchases with virtual currencies, it triggers a release of dopamine in the brain, producing feelings similar to those experienced during substance use.”
Recommendations for Parents and Guardians
To prevent unhealthy habits from forming, Hunt suggests that parents and guardians establish clear time limits for screen time and gaming. She also encourages family activities that promote physical health, such as taking walks, staying hydrated, and ensuring that children are nourished properly.
“It’s crucial to clarify that online games and gambling should be seen as entertainment, not as a means to earn money or resolve financial issues,” Hunt added. She acknowledged that while gambling can be enjoyable and safe for many, it can pose significant risks for a subset of individuals.
Community Initiatives
The county’s initiative is part of a larger program organized by the National Council on Problem Gambling, in collaboration with the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. This campaign will include retailer training and educational webinars designed to raise awareness and promote responsible gambling practices.
As the year comes to a close and the holiday season begins, Prince William County’s leaders remain committed to fostering a community that prioritizes awareness and prevention in the face of growing gambling risks among youth.
